India going in with 8 Batsmen!!!

I was watching the Canada-Kenya pre-match discussion between Siddhu, Symcox and Gavaskar and they soon started talking about India.
Now Mr Gavaskar thinks that with Yuvraj coming back into form and bowling equally well gives Dhoni a chance to bring in Raina and drop a bowler as Yuvraj would be the 4th bowler and Raina and Pathan can complete the 5th bowler’s quota. Thus giving the top guys the license to play it like a 20-20 match.

Now please tell me I am not the only one who thinks that this idea as cool as it sounds is Gavaskar’s insecurity and senility talking

The 8 batsmen theory only holds water if they are firstly playing on a slow and turning pitch like the one against Ireland and if Piyush Chawla continues to bowl like an idiot and Dhoni continues to have amnesia about Ashwin. On a flat batting track, Yuvraj, Pathan, and Raina will be like 20 overs of extra powerplay for the batting side. So even if you score 400 runs the opposition will believe they can chase it. I cannot understand the paranoia of going in with more batsmen… Everytime India has recently score 300 plus runs the top 5 batsmen have done almost all the scoring.. Whatever they do.. if their main spinners are not going to come to the party, its going to be difficult to go the distance.

Ya I mean if you don’t have the confidence that your first 5 batsmen are going to get you through then you are not going to have the confidence with 20 batsmen.

I totally agree with you about Dhoni ignoring Ashwin. I think he should replace Chawla cause he looks more hungry. And if they are going with 8 batsmen I think he should replace Bhajji also cause he definitely looks hungrier than Bhajji.

At this point in the tournament I would say Australia has the best chance to win the cup, then Pakistan, then SA and then India.

If bringing in Raina means that the buggers score 250 in the first 30 overs then I’ll enjoy thoroughly baba.

Don’t think that will happen at Kotla. Kotla is not at 350 – 400 wicket. 300 is possible with some sensible batting

Team India has made the right start but will the bowlers come to the party?

India has made the right start in the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2011. To chase 370 takes a special effort and needs all the luck-gods to be on your side, at least till the last ball of the 50th over. Luck the Bangladeshi’s had, however Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes and their captain Shakib Al Hasan just couldn’t keep their foot on the gas long enough to go the distance. Inspite of some patchy Indian bowling and fielding 371 proved to be a more daunting opposition to the Bangladeshi’s than the Indian bowlers seemed to be.

It’s all good to say that Bangladesh’s reply of 283 at a decent rate of 5.66 rpo was a good effort and worth a lot of praise – yes it was. However leaking 370 runs on their home pitch, even if it’s against the best side in the tournament is 70 runs too many. The Bangladesh bowlers will have their work cut out if their team has to feature in that Quarter final line up.

Having said that the same goes for M.S. Dhoni and Co. While India may have the best batting line up – most of them in form and itching to pile up the runs, batting by itself is not going to win the Cricket World Cup for India. There will be an odd day when the Indian batting gets just about a par score; will the bowlers then come to the party?

Munaf Patel and Zaheer Khan did a fairly good job. Harbhajan was good but for now let’s just blame the dew for the lack of spin. I don’t see Sreesanth playing the next game unless Ashish Nehra is injured. Is there a case for the 5th bowler to be played if the batting top-order is firing the way it is and the part-timers are going for more than 6 an over?

Now is the time to experiment Captain, once in the Quarter’s its do or die.

Shewag fetched me 750 points in the opening match. Nobody else has amassed more off a single game. Watson has 800 odd from two. I’d like to see someone amass more than 750 in a game, and hopefully, I’ll have him in my team on that day as captain.

I totally missed the Sehwag train.. I didn’t have a Fantasy cricket team then… Afridi has made me 1082 points in two consecutive games.. Sehwag is still to beat that

There are 14 teams and based on their rankings they have been divided into 2 groups

    Group A
    Australia (1)
    Pakistan (3)
    New Zealand (5)
    Sri Lanka (7)
    Zimbabwe (9)
    Canada (12)
    Kenya (14

    ______________________________________________________

    Group B
    India (2)
    South Africa (4)
    England (6)
    West Indies (8)
    Bangladesh (10)
    Ireland (11)
    Netherlands (13)

Each team will play every other team in their group. Each win will carry 2 points, a tie or a no-result will carry 1 point.

The top 4 teams from each group will progress to the quarter final.

I don’t think its difficult to pick the 8 quarter finalist’s unless Bangladesh has other ideas…..

It is shocking that Kenya is 14. Ireland is expected at 11. I think that Ireland has the best chance among Bangladesh, Netherlands, Kenya, Zim and Canada to make it through.

Do you see a minow beating a test playing team?

What out for Ireland. I think you can expect them to cause an upset or two. And Canada gave England a run for their money in the warm up game. I don’t expect them to actually beat a test playing nation, neither do I see the Netherlands pull one up. You never know with Kenya though.

I haven’t seen Ireland, Canada, Netherlands or Kenya play recently… But I liked how the Irish played last time

Ireland have been playing like champions in the ICC trophy for a while now.

I think it’s quite possible to see an upset like that because I feel the standards of the minnows have improved and the standards for some test playing nations have come down a few notches. So the gap is smaller than what it used to be.

Australia is no longer invincible, though it still has a formidable bowling attack and an in form Watson.

India is the only nation which has improved but the bowling is still a little weak.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan are unpredictable and can make any side look silly–sometimes themselves.

After the Ashes England were hailed as the next big thing and favorites along with India to lift the cup.
But then they forgot that Test cricket is not one day cricket.

As usual West Indians and Kiwis are here to promote tourism and Zimbabweans are here to write home about their experiences of a phenomenon called “Lunch”.

The Proteas have a tough looking side just like all their previous sides so it’s not unusual that most of us are counting on them to choke just like all their previous sides.

So basically, ya I think the championship is open and it’s anyone’s cup of Chai.

Ha Ha Ha West Indians and Kiwis are here to promote tourism?? Aren’t you being a bit harsh on them.. especially the kiwis.. But well said…. I myself don’t feel Team India are favorites… Yes they are in with a good chance.. but there are a lot of teams who will keep getting better over the tournament… and don’t count Australia out just yet… If there’s one thing they know a thing or two about, its how to win world cups… sri lanka is also a good team. i feel… they have a well balanced batting and bowling unit

I think that Ashwin is an excellent bowler and Chawla has done magnificently. So should India play 3 spinners or drop Harbhajan. I doubt that they’ll drop Harbhajan. I’d be tempted to though. So one of Ashwin and Chawla might be doing water-boy duties.

I think Piyush Chawla will get a game ahead of Ashwin… He picked up 4 wickets against Australia in the warm up game…. I don’t think anyone will make Harbhajan do water-boy duties… He might slap Sreesanth who is very likely to be sitting next to him :P

I’d be surprised if Ashwin is dropped.
